Alena Burešová

Certified Landscape Architect

Where and what did you study?

I studied landscape design at College of Horticulture in Mělník and at Faculty of Horticulture of Brno Mendel University in Lednice, Morava. At the Faculty of Civil Engineering of CTU in Prague I gained my knowledge of urbanism and urban planning.

What do you like the most about landscape and garden architecture?

I like the changeability, variety and also the ephemerality. My work enables me to travel, see new places, watch nature and landscape and meet interesting people.

Where do you get the inspiration for your work?

In the woods or at a pond just a stone’s throw away. You don’t have to travel far to be aware of processes of nature. In the natural landscape I am on the lookout for traces of history and lost works of our ancestors, good landholders. I enjoy recycling materials, bringing up new ways of using them and giving them new forms. Another source of inspiration are cities, their identity and atmosphere. I also visit my colleagues` projects and keep up to date in my area of work. There is no limit to learning new things.

Which one of your projects do you like the most and why?

In general I like landscape works, renewal of vanished roads and tree alleys, and establishing new groves. It is a manifold mosaic of small interventions that brings back the variety which has disappeared in the modern agricultural landscape.

Have you got any awards for your work?

I have cooperated on the green roofs project of the BB office building complex in Prague 4, specifically Delta building, which was awarded the 2nd prize in the Green Roof of the Year contest. Further, the project of  Revitalization of Masaryk Gardens and Exhibition Park in the Ohře River meander in Louny got the people’s award in the Park of the Year competition. I am a member of the Czech Chamber of Architects and of a professional group of Czech Association for Landscape Architecture.

What hobbies do you have?

Besides my garden I still find challenges in wandering Czech mountains and forgotten places. Escaping civilization gives me new impulses and themes and many authentic photographs as well.

What is your favorite place on Earth?

I believe in the saying “East or west, home is best”.
