Garden with sauna by the lake

We designed the garden for year-round use by a large family, aiming to create a lively, dynamic, and playful space. Our intention was to support both shared moments and individual activities for all family members.

The garden’s sloping terrain was shaped into three elevation levels, seamlessly connected to the house. The main outdoor living area links directly to the wooden terrace by the house, which will eventually be shaded by a mature maple tree. A grassed area for sports activities connects to the children’s bedrooms and acts as a transition between the technical zone and the main garden. Here we placed raised beds for growing vegetables and herbs, along with a sandbox for the youngest family members.

The lowest terrace of the garden features a natural swimming pond with an adjacent sauna. This private and tranquil space is enclosed by a planting scheme of shrubs, grasses, and perennials. A separate quiet zone with a firepit is framed by a fair-faced concrete wall. We complemented the firepit with a circular bench, a relaxing hammock, and a small birch grove, enriched by mostly edible plants and berry shrubs.

The choice of materials harmonizes with the wooden façade elements and white plaster walls of the house. Smooth concrete walls and granite blocks used for steps and stepping stones emphasize the terrain modeling. The unified architectural design of the house, garage, and garden pavilion enabled dynamic terrain work and allowed us to green the roofs of all structures. From the upper terrace of the house, there is a beautiful view of the green roofs and the surrounding landscape.
